History

The first building of the new Catholic school was called Guardian Angels. On November 1st, 1883, construction began under the direction of Father Nicholas Horn. While construction was being completed, Father Horn passed away. Father Joseph Ruesing was left with the completion of the school. On March 5th, 1885, the school was opened. Four Franciscan Sisters came to teach its 90 students. This was the first Catholic school in Nebraska to teach boys and girls together.

Completion of the present Guardian Angels School was celebrated on September 1st, 1918, under the direction of Father Ferdinand Peitz. The building which cost $100,000 to build housed the cafeteria in the basement and gymnasium on the third floor along with the classrooms. 222 pupils were enrolled in the school, first through 12th grade. Stephen Cejda was the first to graduate from G.A. The sidewalks were paved in 1923 at the cost of $12,000. In 1951, Father Herman J. Kaup directed the remodeling of the old G.A. school building into six modern classrooms for the price of $33,600. A new auditorium and gymnasium was built and finished on April 25th, 1955, at the cost of $198,883.55.

The original school building which had been used as the sisters' residence, music rooms, and boarding rooms since 1818 was razed to accomodate the building of a new high school. Through the corporation of surrounding parishes Monterey, Aloys, St. Charles, Beemer, and St. Mary's, Central Catholic High School was completed in 1963. The cost to construct the building was $295,000. The school was built on the site of the original G.A. building. The Family Centered Educational Program was formed in 1972 to help in teaching children who did not attend Catholic Schools. The program helped students to get more involved in religion and help guide them to live their lives through Christ. A kindergarten was added to Guardian Angels School in the fall of 1981. The first kindergarten class enrolled 34 students.

In 2010, Central Catholic became home to the junior high and high school students. This combination led to the change of the name to Guardian Angels Central Catholic Schools in 2011.
